Celebrities piled into Park City, UT this weekend for The Sundance Film Festival, which once used to be a quiet film festival for independent films and is now more well known for celebrity appearances and swag tents. Just like at the Golden Globes last week, Robert Redford and The Sundance Film Festival organizers have joined the war on swag. Marc Caro from the Chicago Tribune says
Kevin Bacon is also trying to take the focus away from swag, by talking about his charity SixDegrees.org which is an on-line network where you can learn about charities your friends and celebrities support, and you can contribute as well. The network uses the theory that everyone, including Kevin Bacon, is only six people away from anyone else.
I guess the glory days of swag are coming to an end - watch out celebrities, you might actually have to pay for your own spa weekends and $400 sunglasses!!.
At founder Robert Redford’s behest, the Sundance Film Festival has taken up the
war on swag as well.Every year, the quaint Main Street of Park City, Utah, increasingly resembles a corporate logo showcase as companies rent out storefronts to create “hospitality lounges” from which to “gift” celebrities.None of this is done with Sundance’s blessing, so Redford gave his staffers a mandate to do all they could to promote the festival’s role as a place to celebrate filmmakers and their work, period.
