Ryan O'Neal: Tatum Has Her Say

Tatum O'Neal is now saying that Griffin O'Neal was trying to protect his half-brother Redmond, from father Ryan O'Neal. MSNBC.com is reporting that Tatum on her brothers side in the argument, even though she wasn't present during the incident.

“No matter what my dad is saying in the press, Griffin was not trying to start a fight with him,” she told the program “Entertainment Tonight” Monday. “He was attempting to protect Redmond.”

Ryan O'Neal's manager, Neil Hassman said of Tatum:

“Tatum and her father have an extremely strained relationship at best,” said Hassman. “I would be hesitant to buy into anything Tatum says about her father, or her brothers for that matter.”

Ryan O'Neal says the blow up in the early hours of Saturday, was started by his son Griffin, in a rage, waving a fireplace poker at him. O'Neal says Griffin was waving the poker around and hit his own pregnant girlfriend in the head. O'Neal then went to get his gun as he feared for his safety and that of Griffin's girlfriend.

O'Neal charges that his son grazed him "four or five times" with the fireplace poker and that when he ducked to avoid the swinging weapon, Griffin "hit his own girlfriend in the head." O'Neal adds that he got "nervous" because of the woman's pregnancy. "I fled to my room," he says, "and I got my gun." When Griffin pursued him anew, says Ryan, he fired his gun "into the banister" which scared Griffin into fleeing.

Ryan O'Neal Arrested: Update

Ryan O'Neal, 65, was arrested yesterday in Malibu for alleged assault with a deadly weapon against his son, Griffin O'Neal. Apparently a shot was fired.

Ryan O'Neal Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting His Son

Ryan O'Neal was arrested early Saturday morning by the Malibu Sheriff's Office for allegedly assaulting his son Griffin, 42 and his girlfriend Joanne Berry, according to Star Magazine.

"Ryan O’Neal was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon,” Lt. Crystal Miranda of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Dept., tells Star. Joanne Berry “received minor injuries,” was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to Santa Monica UCLA Medical enter. Lt. Miranda wouldn’t specify what type of weapon was used by O'Neal. She added that Ryan was released from jail Saturday morning,Feb. 3, at 5:30 a.m., after he posted $50,000 bail."

Ryan O'Neal is the father of Oscar winner Tatum O'Neal and has had a long career in Hollywood. O'Neal received an Oscar nomination for Love Story. He also had a long time relationship with Farrah Fawcett.
